Cosme Maria Luis Antonio de Aboitiz was born on 10 December 1943 in Iloilo, on the island of Panay, two years into the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. His father, Alejandro Blas Aboitiz Piñaga, was fifty-one — a Manila-born lawyer whose practice had been rooted in the Iloilo courts since the 1920s. His mother, María del Rosario García Muñoz, known as Charin, was thirty-eight, a Spaniard whom Alejandro had married at Jerez de la Frontera in January 1930. He was one of at least four children of that marriage, and he carried the name of the grandfather he never knew: the sea captain Cosme Damián, who had died on the bridge of his ship off Surigao fifty years before.

What the family lived through in those years is one of the great gaps in this history. Iloilo was occupied from 1942; the city was fought over and badly damaged in the liberation of early 1945. A Spanish-national family with a lawyer father would have been in an ambiguous position — Spain was neutral, and the Spanish community in the islands was left largely to itself, but no one in the Visayas was untouched. Nothing about where the family lived, how Alejandro worked, or what they lost has yet been found in any record.

A Teenager in SydneyUn adolescente en Sídney

Cosme came to Australia at about sixteen, which places his arrival around 1959 or 1960. Family memory records that the family also, at one point, tried living in New Orleans. His father Alejandro would die in Sydney in 1969, "late of Lidcombe", so by the end of the 1960s the family's centre of gravity had shifted decisively to Australia. How and when each of them made the move — ship or aircraft, together or in stages, and on what visa — has not been established; the National Archives of Australia's passenger cards and naturalisation files are the obvious place to look. An Argentine court record from decades later confirms that he held Australian nationality. Memoria familiar

Pepsi-Cola Philippines:

Pepsi-Cola Filipinas:
De vuelta a Manila

The next documented chapter is a surprising one. By 1977 Cosme was President and Chief Executive of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of the Philippines — the country's Pepsi franchise, and one of the largest consumer businesses in the islands. That fact survives in an unlikely place: a 1982 decision of the Philippine Supreme Court that names him in his corporate capacity. So the boy who had left the Philippines at sixteen was back in Manila in his thirties, running a company that his grandfather the sea captain and his father the lawyer would have found hard to imagine. His time at Pepsi ended in the autumn of 1982. In November of that year the New York Times reported his departure from the company, at a moment when PepsiCo was restating the results of its overseas bottling operations. The circumstances of his leaving, and what he did in the years immediately after, are not yet documented.

In 1994 Cosme joined International Container Terminal Services Inc., the Manila-based port operator, as its Senior Vice-President for South America. ICTSI had won the concession for Terminal 5 of the newly privatised Port of Buenos Aires, and Cosme went to Argentina to run it as Vice-President and General Manager of the operating company, BACTSSA. He was also President of Puerto de Rosario S.A., the company that took over the river port at Rosario, four hundred kilometres up the Paraná. He held those roles until December 1999. There is a curious symmetry here: ICTSI's board included Jon Ramon Aboitiz of the Cebu business dynasty founded by Cosme Damián's second cousin Paulino — the other branch of the Lekeitio family, whose path had diverged from ours a century before.

The Argentine chapter did not end quietly. After leaving ICTSI he sued the company over a commission he believed he was owed; the case went to appeal and was decided against him in 2010. The judgment is one of the few documents that fixes a fact about his later life, recording him as an Australian national.

Argentina matters to this family for reasons that go well beyond one posting. The other half of the tree — the Aguilar, Foster, de Tezanos Pinto and Torres Agüero lines — is Argentine, and the country accounts for more events in the family database than any other. That story deserves its own pages.

The GapsLas lagunas

For a man who died so recently, the documentary trail of Cosme's life is oddly thin between the fixed points above. The quarter-century from 2000 to 2024 is almost entirely undocumented here, as are the years between his arrival in Australia and his emergence at the head of Pepsi-Cola Philippines. The family's own memories — of New Orleans, of Manila in the 1970s, of Buenos Aires, of Sydney — are the richest source there is, and they are the next thing to gather while they can still be gathered.
